About ComboMoji
The same emoji can mean completely different things around the world. Let's explore these cultural differences together.
Who's Behind This
Created by Fabio, a linguistics enthusiast and developer
I started this project after repeatedly misinterpreting emojis in messages from international colleagues. What started as personal research turned into this comprehensive resource that now helps thousands of people communicate more clearly across cultures.
Why This Matters
Growing up, we had dictionaries and encyclopedias on the shelf. Now we have Wikipedia for almost everything. But emojis? There's no authoritative source explaining what they actually mean. Maybe it's because people still see them as childish or trivial. But here's the thing: we're returning to pictographic communication, and it's happening faster than most people realize.
We're witnessing the birth of a new form of communication, and it's evolving in real-time. A 16-year-old in Seoul uses 💀 differently than a 40-year-old in New York. Someone in Brazil sees 🙏 as gratitude, while in India it's a greeting. Without a shared understanding, we're basically speaking different languages while thinking we're all saying the same thing.
This project exists to fill that gap. ComboMoji documents how emojis are actually used in the wild across cultures, regions, and generations. Not the official Unicode definitions, but real usage from real conversations. Because when we understand each other better, we communicate better.

I run every emoji meaning through data analysis and then double check with native speakers. When I find an emoji means one thing in Japan and something else in Brazil, you get both meanings plus the cultural context that explains why these differences exist.
-
Emoji meanings shift faster than you might think. What 💀 meant five years ago isnt what it means today. I track how these change across different communities and age groups so you're getting current usage patterns not outdated definitions.

Clear communication matters for everyone. The site works with screen readers and other accessibility tools so whether you're checking an emoji meaning quickly on your phone or doing deeper research on your computer, you can find what you need.

I use AI for proofreading, brainstorming ideas, and translating content into other languages. But I dont generate the whole site with AI, that would be crazy. In 2025, not using these tools to improve your work would be like refusing to use spell check. The cultural insights and data analysis? That's all human research.
